Some traffic violations in Lagos and their penalties

Lagos is one of the most crowded cities in Africa, due to its dense population and compact size. In a city as crowded and congested as Lagos, traffic congestion is unavoidable because there are over 5 million cars and 200,000 commercial vehicles plying the roads on a regular basis. Traffic congestion is a significant challenge for Lagos state residents; spending at least three hours every day. This can be exhausting for both physical and mental health.

To curtail the time spent in traffic, the Lagos State Traffic Laws were put in place. The laws were to help create orderliness on the road as well as control traffic.

These are some of the laws and penalties for traffic violations.

1. Driving without a valid driver’s license 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N20,000.00 Additional: Impound vehicle.

   

2. Driving of a vehicle by a person under 18 years 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N30,000.00 Additional: Impound vehicle.

3. Learner driver without a permit 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offenders N30,000.00 Additional: Impound vehicle

4. Driving with a fake number plate 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N30,000.00 Additional: Imprisonment for a term of six (6) months.

5. Driving an unlicenced unregistered vehicle: 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N30,000.00 Additional: Imprisonment for a term of three (3) months.

   

6. Not painting a commercial vehicle in approved colors Offender's fine of N25,000.00 Additional: Enforce painting.

   

7. Disobeying traffic control personnel 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N30,000.00 Additional: Impound vehicle, LASDRI Training.

   

8. Smoking, Drinking, and Eating while driving 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N30,000.00 Additional: Impound vehicle, Three (3) Months imprisonment, or six (6) monthly community service.

   

9. Driving vehicles with doors left open. 1st offender N20,000.00 Subsequent offender N30,000.00. Additional: Community service in addition to the fine.

10. Driving company motor vehicles with non-functional lamps Offenders pay N25,000.00 Additional: Effect repairs.
